Anyone hear about this? A classical eq server built from the ground up. Sounds interesting, do you guys think it is going to be a flop or hit? eqclassic.org

I had been following this for quite awhile before SOE caught wind and they had to take their website down. They had amassed a fairly large following, I heard someone mention they were getting a couple thousand unique hits a day. It's intriguing but with eqmac being as much fun as it is, I've lost most of my interest.

Their development is still ongoing, and they just recently got their site back up, but without forums. I'm told they're being extra careful so as to avoid anymore attention from SOE. Personally I prefer pre luclin so if they ever do finish, I plan to atleast check it out. The only reason I came here to eqmac is because I found out it was frozen at pop; its not classic, but it's close as I can get. But who knows, maybe this community will hook me like the days of old~

There are pro's and con's to each era, the later ones having more con's than the previous expansion, but also having a few cooler things. I've read a little bit about eqclassic, but like many other people, I'm having way too much fun here on EQMac. This would be a tough community to beat, so I don't I'll even check it out.

I think it would be most interesting if there were some sort of public domain client / server for an EQ-like game, with tools for creating new zones.

But EQClassic is a server but you need to find an ancient copy of the client (and somehow hack so it doesn't get patched). Which means it won't run on Mac.

I had been following Eqclassic for a few months before they shut down the site and the forums. Searching for information on that project is what led me to EQMac.

After think about this long and hard I realized EQclassic will just be plain rough. Here are some items going into EQclassic that I just don't see myself going through again:

Hybrid XP penalty
Large Race XP penalty
NO SERVERWIDE CHAT CHANNELS
No PoK or Luclin portals
Hell levels (like the ones at 30, 35, 40, and 45)

I say no thanks to all that stuff, particularly the hell levels and lack of chat channels.

Thats what made eq great if you ask me.

Hell Levels especially not only did it keep you in a certain area for longer than you expected so you got to learn more about the game it was a very large accomplishment when you finally got past them and you felt happy and satisified.

Leveling up alts through hell levels is annoying.

You want to bitch about stuff how about in the old days when casters had to stare at a book and never knew what was going on if they wanted mana~

I won't be playing there, I used to follow it for months on end but once the site got shut down I realized what an unstable project it really is. Plus, I don't think a lot of the people that originally registered there even knows it exists anymore. Private EQ servers are always a big flop, because the time required to Progress in EQ is huge and the server can just be taken down in a moments notice and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

Just received an e-mail update from the eqclassic team:

Quote:
Dear Registered User,

We wish to extend a quick apology for our recent downtime. A billing error resulted in the suspension of our domain listing services, but this has since been resolved.

We would also like to take this time to encourage our inactive users to stop by and visit. In the last few months, several exciting new forums have been added to the boards! You are also encouraged to review the new EQC development road map (http://www.eqclassic.org/roadmap.html), which grants more detailed insight into the future of the EQC project.

We look forward to seeing you back online!

~EQClassic Team

Yes, they have a team now thats better than it has ever been. Development is still going well but its for PC, not Mac.

Development had recently stopped through February and most of March, but has picked up recently.

I understand that the concept/development is totally different but at it's core Project1999 already exists for this sort of thing and it is kinda fun. It works quite well via Wine and I used to play there occasionally but it's just not the same at the end of the day. You just can't recapture the feeling we had playing EQ back in the day.

Experiencing your first MMO is like losing your virginity, it only happens once!
