With my luck I wouldn't get less than a G5 quad. Luckily I was able to recoup most of my investment in the G5 dual 2.3 which could only box 2. I'm also not sure on the ATI card vs Nvidia. That is a single core machine? Lots of ram is nice but if only 1 processor it's rolling the dice.

I am looking at buying this for about $200:

Power Mac G5 A1047
CPU: 2.5 Ghz
Ram: 8 GB
HDD: 500 GB
VGA: ATI Radeon 9800 XT 256 MB
OS: leopard 10.5.8

Based on one of the posts, this should be able to box 6 toons without much lag (on a good connetion), correct?

Looks like that is a dual 2.5 so not bad for EQ. Being an earlier G5 I'm not sure it would run 6 though.

I've decided to hold out until I can get either a DM9591LL/A (dual core 2.3) or a M9749xx/A (dual 2.7), and hoping for the dual core 2.3 as it isn't nearly as much of a power hog and has faster memory / graphics card.

Daaaaaah! To be honest, this s* is confusing...older Mac gear runs more instances better than newer Mac gear? That just seems polar opposite to PC mentality. I really don't know enough about Macs to know what I should get to be able to run 6 toon at the same time. Hopefully I can get 4 toons to run on it and just use my MacBook pro to run the other 2...when I get off this damn ship and my sorry ass into a house. :)

It's a dual.

The video card is not awesome, but it is about the best I can get for that model (that I can tell according to the wiki page for G5s).

Native vs emulation.

The newer Macs are Intel processors requiring Rosetta to emulate the older PPC architecture which slows things down.

The answer is a G5 quad, tried and tested to work.

No, but I'd maybe max out the RAM.

Alright.

I was going to go with a CL buy but today i got approved through Barclay's for the apple store for $2k so that threw a whole wrench in my plans. Still, considering the quad 2.5 g5 with 6gb and a 7800GT. For what I want, it almost seems like a better buy.

There's little chance a new i3 would outperform a G5 quad with 6gb of RAM.

As soon as Hobart has the clients and SOE has the new website ready, I'll be archiving this thread since it will become obsolete.

There will be a new sticky with both the Intel and PPC (new client) system requirements.
