hi, played eq live from kunark to day of TSS launch. when i retired went off/on eqemu for 3years.
anyways, going to be buying a mac since the eqmac is frozen at PoP right when the game was at its peak.
anyways seeing if people have suggestions for macs ( saw thread) but thinking something like 700 or under if possible
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6883104057 is an example but they are sold out. thinking of trying walmart or something tomorrow. any suggestions? if not could fork out 1k and get a macbook.
thanks and hope to see you guys in game within the next day or two

Best bet if you are buying a mac mostly just for eqmac is to hit up ebay or cragslist for a G5 tower, you can read the "what to buy" thread here for more information on the whys and whats to buy.

Should be able to get a decent G4 or G5 tower for $200-$500.

post from a craigslist add, this should work right. its an Apple Mac Mini w/ specs can get right under 400
As far as the specs go, it's got a 2.0ghz Core 2 Duo chip with a 120 gig hard drive, OS 10.6 (sonw leopard), a superdrive (for burning cds and dvds), and 1 gig of RAM. The airport wireless internet card works flawlessly, and the resolution looks amazing on our HDTV. I have the original box, and I think I have the original restore discs even though I've upgraded the OS.

If this is primarily for EQ, you want a G5, not a Core2Duo. EQMac runs natively on the G5, and there is a huge performance decrease when you go with a Core2Duo, even if the specs say different.

if it was a core2duo for a good deal, would 2 gigs be okay for ram to balance it out for eq?

The core2duo is an intel processor, and the eqmac client is still a PPC only app, which means that it has to run with the rosetta (emulation) software in the current Mac OS's. 2 gig would be the minimum you would want to run, and it wouldn't run as well as some older PPC macs with the same amount of memory.

Really depends on what you want to do: play solo - it will be fine; raid- you won't really be happy with it; anything in the middle is up to your expectations.

ahh okay so
Mac G5 2.7 Dual / 1 GB Ram / 250 GB HD / OSX 10.5.4
I have the 2.5 Dual , 2.0 Dualand the 1.8 available
so that should be fine since its g5 and could upgrade ram too if it isn't enough still.

You can basically find the 2.3 dualcore for nearly the same price. When you are skimming craigslist or ebay listings look to see if the g5 has a Geforce 6600 or 7800, since those two cards will give you the best performance. If the g5 has a radeon its the 2004 or early 05 model, which is still great, but you were talking about forking out 1k. Buy the 2.3ghz DC with a geforce 6600 and you can even upgrade the card to 7800 if you want in the future.

I'd go bigger than 2GB of RAM, but that's personal preference.

Make sure you buy Non-ECC, Non-Reg, and the appropriate speed on the RAM. Also double check how much per slot your model allows. Best bet is just go on Google and search for Mac RAM.
