Well I am reaching my 1-year anniversary of playing the game that interrupted my 5-year MacEQ habit. I am posting a link of a new review that sums the game up pretty well for those who have asked me about it. It is for both PC and Mac (intel-based only).

Eve online has by far the greatest pvp of any mmo ever made, followed closely by rallos zek in eq pre PoP, has a really steep learning curve, but once you get it nothing really comes close pvp-wise

edit: just read that article you posted, great article, but i would disagree with him saying that the action and pvp comes end game, my corp(guild) has a sister corp that sponsors new pilots to come out on pvp ops, we have people regularly atending who have only been in the game for a week, and there still racking up kills if you want to do pvp alone then it does take some time to get powerfull and capable, but get a whole mob of noobs with a couple veteran FC's and you can have an effective pvp team. eve is all about teamwork, as said in the article it is a player driven universe, so you gotta be involved.

Yes I totally agree. Even though I have been playing for about a year I PVP in 0.0 sec all the time. One veteran FC can totally take n00bs and create an effective team fairly quickly. Anyone who wants to PVP can easily get into a sister corp. and learn quickly.

What I enjoy in the mix is the close teamwork via Ventrillo/EveVoice/TeamSpeex, voice is everything for response times.

Have open Ventrilo/TeamSpeex servers available for people here on eqmac but everyone seems to prefer typing and channels which sucks for raiding imho.

Very few Guilds in EQ since 1999 have ever used voice chat that I am aware of. The main reason being the response time in EQ does not call for it.

Puller pulls 2-3 mobs, "Inc a %t and friends"
Crowd Control, "%t slowed, rooted, or mezzed"
Group,"/assist MA
Healer,"Healing %t"

Then wash, rinse, and repeat while you kill a mob for five minutes the entire time chatting in text or ninja afk folding clothes or watching TV or reading a book, or.....................

Voice chat is best for FPS or newer PvP centered MMO's.

Yea I really dig watching 8 channel windows and typing. I also love people who are folding clothes or ninja afk while others need an answer now. Or like when mez breaks......and you are watching TV, rofl

That is EQ, I did not say it was acceptable or right, but it is the facts.

Slow game mechanics = lazy play or halfass play from some people.

Raiding with voice chat has many drawbacks, especially if you are trying to communicate to 50-60 players. I like it for grouping or other minor activities.

For me it is also a matter of atmosphere. In Eve, Voicechat is the spaceship radio. In EQ voice would not fit very well.

Ah, Eve... I get into that game now and then, though it does take a while to get stuff done for me.

I too like PvP now and then. I did play on Rallos back in the day quite a bit, and was a member of a DE PKK guild. That was a lot of fun... and could be very frustrating.

Those were the days ;)

I gave the eve trial a shot. I still have a few days left, but so far it has not left me with a good impression of eve. It seems overly complicated with a horrible overuse of right-clicking. If the movement system were different and there were more mapped commands, I might enjoy it more. The concept is great, the product not so much.

oh, also, I have to comment on the line about voice chat not fitting in the fantasy world of EQ. Do you think textual communication is more relevant to medieval fantasy role playing?

Of course not, but at least i dont have to hear hot darkelf chicks with raspy mans voice. :-)

That said, i think it actually *would* help to use TS or such for EQ raids sometimes. Especially with lots of people in raid. Because with so much people, the chat sometimes just pass to fast to everyone read whats going on. On TS you could mute all others and just let the RL talk at important points of the raid. :-)

Most raiders use multiple chat windows at least on raids. Then they filter the important channels to one or 2 windows so they dont need to look all over the place. I use 4 windows, with /rs, /shout, /cyber....er...I mean our ranger/puller coordination channels filtered into one.

I am 99% sure that Blaze does as well.

But even with multiple windows you still miss the occassional command, especially when the chips are down.

Being able to cummunicate via talk, even if it was simply 1 or 2 key personel would be of assistance in some situations.

The biggest advantage is being able to 'communicate' without having to type, it allows raiders to perform raid roles and still be able to communicate. It does require specific discipline or limiting those being able to 'talk', but if you have the right group of raiders it does offer significant advantages.

That being said, I do enjoy raiding without TS or Vent also.

Two extra factoids about Eve - all the expansions are free. Yup - free. They also have DAILY downtime.
