I was searching for other Mac MMORPGs and was wondering if anybody can tell me what they think of this game. The screenshots look sort of like an old Ultima game.
Heh. Clan Lord was my very first experience with MMORPGs. I played from v26 or so (Open Beta) up to about v120-something. I still see many of my fellow players in RL on a rare occasion (we're having our usual MacWorld get-together next week), but I haven't played in years.
It hasn't changed much. The population is tiny, even smaller than Al'Kabor, and the graphics are waaaaaay outdated (2-D "sprites"). While there's no cap on character skills, there's a pretty pronounced level of diminishing return, and you become unable to solo pretty quickly. Raiding is sorta non-existent, as there are no real "Boss" mobs. Significant or unique items are also non-existent, and there are only a limited number of "normal" items.
What is "different" about the game is Joe's (Joe Williams, Delta Tao's founder) idea of an in-game "Karma" system, where you have a reputation set by your peers. You get and give good or bad "Karma" points to and from other players. There's no limit (although there is a refresh time) to the amount you can give and it leads to some very interesting social situations. Your reputation has little to nothing to do with actual game mechanics, but it does get a sense of who is liked and hated in the game.
I think the trial version gives you limited interaction with other players, and may give you a good sense of the game.
